About Us
Solid reading skills are essential to academic success and future learning throughout life. In 2019 over a third of US fourth-grade students were not reading at grade level; Covid has only increased the struggle. While there are schools that produce strong readers, some elementary schools in North Carolina have only 15 percent of their students reading proficiently.
We offer a reading intervention program with an intensive phonics approach to help any student who needs to strengthen his/her reading skill level. Direct instruction, drills and games, review and rewards, and reading practice are all incorporated to enable reading success.
As a Faith-based organization, we base our curriculum and our methods on a Biblical philosophy. Using Bible principles to develop a solid foundation, we teach the Biblical mandate for respect for God, parents, and others. Our desire is to show "to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done." Psalm 78:4

Devonshire Baptist Church, led by Pastor Glenn Stevenson, has graciously allowed Read the Word Academy to use their facilities for summer classes.
CLASS SCHEDULE
June 13 - August 1, 2025
9:30 - 10:30 AM
Monday Through Friday
Class size will vary based on the number of students that participate; however, the target size is 10 students.
An effort will be made to group children according to age; however, reading ability will be the main factor. Using DIBELS, each child’s reading level will be determined.
OUR ACTIVITIES
INTENSIVE TRADITIONAL PHONICS INSTRUCTION
The National Reading identifies five components in developing foundational reading skills: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
DRILLS/READING PRACTICE/ GAMES/REVIEW
Reviewing the material presented will help children to learn more effectively has they build on reading principles and guidelines.
FUN-DAY FRIDAY
Friday would be “Fun-Day Friday” with reading relay games, a fun refreshment, and a 15 minute Bible story. Our goal is that each child will not only grow in his/her reading skill but will also learn that (1) God loves you (2) God cares about you (3) God wants to be a part of your life.

REGISTRATION FEE
$10.00
This fee is waived if registration is made before June 11.
SEVEN WEEKS OF ONE-HOUR INSTRUCTION
$100.00
Starting June13 and ending August 1,, classes will meet for one hour daily, Monday through Friday (no class on July 4).
BOOKS/SUPPLIES
$25
This fee covers all textbooks and supplies needed for the entire summer.
